Born in 1956 in Heilongjiang, China.
Shen’s works challenge the viewer to consider the distinction between reality and the ideal world; the truth and the fake. His early works include large Jurassic-like sculptures constructed from real animal bones, reminiscent of Borges’ Book of Imaginary Beings. These absurd skeletons exude an air of ancient wisdom, thus authenticating the magic of myths and folklore. At the same time, they allude to contemporary concerns of genetic modification and environmental threat. Shen’s first solo exhibition took place in Melbourne, Australia, in 1995. Since then, the artist has participated in countless group and solo exhibitions around the world and his works can be found in leading museums and private collections. Shen lives and works in Sydney, Australia and Beijing.
