Lu’s choice of material is key to this artwork. With a deceptive similarity to crystal or glass, this bed appears fragile and precious. Yet, acry- lic is simply plastic, a man-made material that is cheap, practical and hard- wearing. It’s cer- tainly not known for its aesthetic beauty. By using such an ordinary material to make an antique wedding bed, which is itself a symbol of Chinese cultural history, Lu points to the vulgarity of contemporary consumerism and the continuing backwardness in China.
